Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
