The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
