TikTok Offers Viewers Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that enables them to cut down on the amount of AI-created videos appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the platform announced that it now features over 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is being tested over the following weeks before a widespread launch. This shift comes amid a rise in AI content, spurred by recent content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that nearly one in 10 of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site primarily display content made by AI. A large amount of this content is classified as mass-produced AI material, a phrase for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that many people enjoy content produced via AI tools, including digital art to informative clips, and we aim to provide users the power to increase or decrease of that, according to their own choices,” commented a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

The platform disclosed that there are presently 1.3bn videos on its app labeled as made with AI. Collectively, more than 100 m videos are added to the platform daily, making AI content a minor part of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Members will be capable of decrease or raise the level of AI-generated videos they watch by accessing the content preference option in the platform and picking AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the filter include current affairs, clothing, beauty, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s guidelines require content makers to label convincing AI-made content, and it forbids malicious fake videos of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any believable artificial content that is not labeled can be taken down under its terms of service.

Additionally, the platform will now attach an AI-generated tag to content created with its own AI tools, or flagged by an collaborative effort for recognizing artificial media. This step is intended to help prevent users from attempting to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The company is also introducing a $2 million educational fund for experts and organizations to create informative material about using AI responsibly. This program will benefit educational bodies focused on training coding and technology.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has justified its content review process, amid controversy over plans to cut jobs for a large number of safety staff in the UK. The company is expected to cut 439 jobs in its trust and safety department in London, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead stated that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but automated tools can safeguard staff by filtering out the most distressing content before it is viewed by staff. The company stated a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content reviewed by content reviewers over the past year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
